All of the professionals with the Immigration Law Group are the children of immigrants themselves and understand what it means to establish a new life in a new country.
The Immigration Law Group is conveniently located in northwest suburban Itasca, which is near all major expressways. Office hours are Monday through Friday with evening and Saturday appointments available. Ample parking is available and the office is handicap accessible. Payment may be made by cash, check, or credit card. A Spanish speaking attorney and translator are available if needed (se habla español). Ana M. Mencini
Ana Méndez Mencini is a native of New York State. She moved to Illinois where she attended and graduated from Fenton High School in Bensenville. After high school Ms. Mencini attended Lake Forest College as a Richter Scholar. She graduated with a B.A. in English. After graduating, Ms. Mencini was retained by GMI Software, Inc. in Chicago. While working at GMI Software, Inc., Ms. Mencini attended DePaul University where she earned a M.A. in Writing. While continuing to work at SunGard Futures Systems as Vice-President of Documentation, Training, and Quality Assurance (the successor to GMI Software, Inc.), Ms. Mencini attended Chicago-Kent College of Law.
At Chicago-Kent, Ms. Mencini was the Managing Editor of the Chicago-Kent Law Review. She was also a finalist in the College's Moot Court Competition. Ms. Mencini was the recipient of numerous scholarships from groups including the DuPage Association of Women Lawyers, the Northwest Suburban Bar Association, and the Chicago-Kent College of Law. Ms. Mencini graduated from Chicago-Kent in the top 13% of her class.
Ms. Mencini has had two articles published, "Internet Road Shows: Oral or Written Prospectus Under the Securities Act of 1933," in the ILLINOIS BAR JOURNAL (co-author, January 2002) and "New Technology Raises a New Question: What is the Definition of a Broker-Dealer?" in the CORPORATION, SECURITIES & BUSINESS LAW FORUM (March 2003). She has also been the speaker at a number of events where she has spoken on criminal convictions and their impact on immigration status and immigrants rights.
In the area of pro bono work, Ms. Mencini was a volunteer with the Midwest Immigrant and Human Rights Center. As such, she was able to win asylum for her clients who had escaped persecution in Colombia to come to the United States.
Ms. Mencini's practice is concentrated in the area of Immigration Law. Specifically, Ms. Mencini works on family and employment based cases, waivers, naturalization, adjustment of status, consular processing, asylum, and removal defense work. Ms. Mencini has successfully handled waiver cases, L visas, H-1B cases, and adjustment of status cases involving the Child Status Protection Act.
Ms. Mencini is admitted to the bar in Illinois and the U.S. District Court Northern District of Illinois. She is also a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), the DuPage County Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association, and the Illinois State Bar Association. From July 2010 through June 2011, Ms. Mencini will be serving as the Chair of the Immigration Law Committee for the DuPage County Bar Association.
Ms. Mencini is married and the mother of three young boys.
Estela R. Unzueta
Estela R. Unzueta is of counsel with the Immigration Law Group and Ana M. Mencini & Associates, P.C. She concentrates her practice in the areas of immigration and family law. Ms. Unzueta began her career in the legal field with the United States District Court in Chicago, Illinois. She was employed by the United States District Court for more than six years. During this time, she held several different positions, from Secretary to the Directors to courtroom deputy for the Honorable Blanche M. Manning. As Secretary to the Directors, Ms. Unzueta worked primarily for the Clerk of Court and Chief Deputy Clerk and also assisted in the coordinating of attorney admissions to the Federal Bar.
As a courtroom deputy, Ms. Unzueta was responsible for managing and monitoring Judge Manning's civil and criminal case calendar. She prepared minute orders for all court proceedings, sentencing orders in criminal cases, final judgments in civil cases and other procedural documents. As courtroom deputy, Ms. Unzueta had daily contact with attorneys and pro se litigants regarding scheduling, filing of pleadings and status of cases.
Ms. Unzueta is a graduate of Madonna High School. She earned a Bachelor's Degree from DePaul University in June 2000 with a major in management and a minor in Spanish. In addition, Ms. Unzueta holds a law degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law, which was awarded in May 2004. While at Chicago-Kent, Ms. Unzueta earned a certificate in labor and employment law, was on the Dean's List (Fall 2004), earned the CALI Award for Highest Grade in Illinois Civil Procedure, and studied immigration law under Carla Tapia-Ruano, past-president of AILA. Ms. Unzueta sat for the bar exam in July 2004 and was admitted to the practice of law in Illinois in November 2004.
While with the Immigration Law Group and Ana M. Mencini & Associates, P.C., Ms. Unzueta has worked on naturalization cases and numerous consular processing and adjustment of status cases. She has prevailed on a Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) petition and has successfully won numerous waiver cases.
Most recently, Mrs. Unzueta won a $97,000 money judgment, 75% of attorney fees, $30,000 in debt reduction, and 75% of a 401k for a client in a divorce trial.
Ms. Unzueta was born and raised on Chicago's west side and is the daughter of Mexican immigrants. Not only is she fluent in Spanish, but she understands first-hand the struggles and hardships suffered by the immigrant community.
Ms. Unzueta lives in the Chicago suburbs with her husband and three children. Throughout the years, Ms. Unzueta has been active in her community, from teaching CCD classes and tutoring ESL students, to assisting in soup kitchens for the homeless, and most recently acting as a soccer coach. Ms. Unzueta also volunteers in the immigrant community, most recently participating in the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society's naturalization workshops.
Ms. Unzueta is a member of the Illinois Bar Association, American Bar Association, Chicago Bar Association, Federal Bar Association and American Immigration Lawyers Association.
Leticia Marquez
Leticia Marquez is a legal assistant with the Immigration Law Group. Ms. Marquez is of Mexican descent and is a life-long resident of the Chicago area having grown up on the south side of Chicago. Ms. Marquez graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in Chicago and holds an Associates Degree from Robert Morris College. She is fluent in Spanish. Previously to working in the legal field, Ms. Marquez worked in the banking and insurance fields. Ms. Marquez is an area resident and is the mother of two sons.
Elena DeCasas
Elena DeCasas is a part-time assistant with the Immigration Law Group. Ms. DeCasas is of Mexican descent and is a life-long resident of the Chicago area having grown up in Addison. Ms. DeCasas graduated from Addison Trail High School and is currently a sophomore at DePaul University where she is pursuing a degree in accounting. She is fluent in Spanish.
